Chapter 23 We Celebrate the Mass
The Mass is the Church’s greatest celebration. It is the most important time for our parish to come together.
We gather together, welcome one another, stand and sing in the beginning of mass. The priest starts mass with the Sign of the Cross. We praise God by singing, “Glory to God.”
We listen to three readings from the bible at mass. The Gospel is read by the deacon or priest. The Gospel is the Good News of Jesus and His teachings. The readings and homily helps us to learn about Jesus.
The gifts of bread and wine are brought to the priest during mass. The altar, or table of the Lord, is prepared by the priest. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and special prayers and actions, the priest turns the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus.
We prepare to receive the Eucharist by praying the Our Father. We share the sign of peace. When we receive the Eucharist we say, “Amen.” which means, “Yes, I believe.”
Mass ends with a blessing. The priest or deacon says, “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” We respond, “Thanks be to God.” We are sent to live as followers of Jesus.
A note about Spelling Homework:
If your child gets all the words correct on the Spelling Pre-test given in school and can correctly spell them with you at home, he or she does not need to do spelling homework every night. If you feel the spelling homework is beneficial for other reasons such as handwriting practice, routine, discipline, you can continue to do it. Use this extra time to review math facts or read. Please review the spelling words the night before the test.
